  Billion children live in poverty
Updated 22 October 2003, 12.45
Starving child
A billion children in the developing world are living without many basic human needs, according to a new study.

According to Unicef, about half the children in Middle Eastern, African and other third world countries do not have things like education or safe water.

It thinks the solution may be to set up an international fund for children.

The United Nations wants to end extreme poverty by 2015, but the report, called Child Poverty in the Developing World, makes this look very unlikely.

Nearly 1.2 million children from 46 developing countries were investigated in the report.

It found a third of children had no toilet facilities, and lived in houses with five people per room.

It claims to be the largest and most accurate survey of children ever done.
